ADHD Strengths

When my husband was diagnosed with ADHD, I started reading up on the condition.

Everything I found was dismal.

We had a mostly happy marriage, but the literature told me that wouldn’t be possible forever. It was hard not to freak out.

Fortunately, I eventually found the literature of Dr. Hallowell, who takes a strengths-based approach to ADHD.

My whole mindset shifted

.People with ADHD can be, and are, successful in academics, social situations, careers, relationships, parenting, and more.

Every person with ADHD is different, but some common ADHD strengths are:

🔘Creativity
🔘Quick thinking
🔘Great problem-solving skills, especially in a crisis
🔘The ability to dream big
🔘A sense of fun
🔘A sense of humor
🔘Hyperfocus
🔘Compassion
🔘Out-of-the-box thinking
🔘Empathy
🔘Generosity
🔘Spontaneity

I can go on, but one way to find the strengths is to reframe. If your child is hyperactive, think of how their energy can translate to a sport now or a career in the future.

If your child takes dangerous risks, be careful! But also, they might be able to take the risks necessary to have a successful career in the future. Right now, they probably have a unique way of seeing the possibilities of the world.

If your child gets distracted or daydreams, they probably have some creative things happening in their brain.

If your child has intense emotions, you get to learn stronger empathy! And they might have a strong sense of fairness or a huge personality that will serve them well.

The reframes are endless. Sure, ADHD brings very real challenges that require strong strategies. But looking for the strengths will help you and your child move forward to reach their potential.

Connect with your child and understand their strengths through this fun back-and-forth journal, designed to help you both understand each other better.
